Handling & Care

Natural materials and jewellery can sometimes be sensitive to change in temperature and humidity especially if they are composed of two or more materials. They should not be worn in steam baths or saunas. Some of the materials will naturally change colour over time but that is part of the magic of dealing with natural materials.

How to clean and care for…

COCONUT
Simply wipe the coconut with a soft wet cloth using mild coconut or vegetable oil. Do not use any water or chemicals to clean the coconut as that will only dry it out and make it crack. Coconut will darken over time. Never soak it as it will swell and dry out.

WOOD
To clean wooden products all you need is a soft damp cloth and some olive oil. After dampening the soft cloth wipe clean the dirt and then rub olive oil into the wood. Once the olive oil is in the wood you should polish the product with a soft dry cloth. Please note that wood will darken in colour over time especially after oil treatments. Never soak as it will swell and dry out.

BRASS
This is a metal alloy made from a combination of zinc and copper. Originally a sparkling golden colour brass has a tendency to tarnish with age. Tarnishing is caused by oxidation from exposure to air.  In order to keep brass looking good it is necessary to clean off any tarnish and polish the brass products as needed. Brass can be cleaned with a simple soap (washing up liquid) solution. However a favourite of mine is simply a cotton cloth and some fresh lemon juice – this will restore its golden tint.

STERLING SILVER & SILVER PLATE
Silver polishing cloths are excellent as they are impregnated with cleaner and have anti tarnish properties. You will find they are available in most places. Method number 2 – you will need aluminium foil, water, salt and baking soda. Line a bowl with the aluminium foil and add 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Then pour some hot but not boiling water into the bowl. Stir to dissolve the powders and place your jewellery into the bowl. Length of time to keep the jewellery submerged depends … the results may be immediate or they may take a few minutes. However if a product is very tarnished this cleaning method will not make your jewellery perfect and looking new. Additional polishing with a cloth will still be needed.

PURE COTTON, VISCOSE, ORGANIC COTTON & BAMBOO

Machine wash on a delicate cycle separately or hand wash. Line dry for best results but you can tumble dry on a low setting.
